Locum practice nurses for your surgery

Request a nurse for the specific clinics or nursing work your practice needs covered. Describe the patient groups, skills and session pattern so the request can be matched to relevant experience.

Describe the nursing work appointment by appointment

List the clinic types and procedures involved, along with appointment lengths and time for documentation. If cover spans several different types of nursing work, identify the essential skills for each. A request for “a practice nurse” is too broad to tell whether someone can safely cover the whole rota.

Spell out any specialist requirements

If the role requires prescribing, advanced practice or a particular training record, include this in the brief. Review recent experience and relevant evidence alongside registration. Make clear which responsibilities remain with the permanent team and where the locum can seek advice during a session.

Choose remote or on-site delivery deliberately

Procedural clinics require appropriate premises and physical attendance. A remote nursing request needs a bounded workload, records access and a route for patients who need to be seen. A mixed role should specify which sessions take place in the surgery.

Agree the facilities, induction, support, pay and terms before confirming cover. For a recurring booking, identify who manages continuity between the locum’s sessions.

Booking

From request to confirmed booking

Post the shift, review applicants and agree terms in writing. Every step is recorded for you and the locum.

Separate different clinic requirements

If one morning mixes several types of appointment, list each type. A “standard nurse clinic” means different things in different practices. Explain the equipment, protocols and support available. A proposed locum can then be assessed against each required skill, and any gap can be resolved before patients are booked.

Professional requirements for the role

Check current NMC registration and relevant register entries. Nursing registration applies across the UK.

Match the individual to the advertised duties and patient groups. A registered nurse is not automatically an advanced practitioner or a prescriber. Include any required prescribing qualification, recent procedure-specific experience and support arrangements in the brief.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about booking cover

Can any registered nurse cover our practice nurse rota?

The proposed person needs relevant competence and experience for the duties. Practice nursing skills vary from one registered nurse to the next, so check the clinic requirements, professional registration, training and support.

Can we include prescribing in the request?

Yes, but state the requirement and scope clearly. Relevant professional status, competence, indemnity and local arrangements need checking. A general practice nurse booking only includes prescribing when it has been requested and agreed.

How much is the booking fee?

£19.99 + VAT per locum for each calendar day worked, including a part-day. Prices exclude VAT. The practice contracts with and pays the locum directly, including agreed expenses, separately from our fee. The same fee applies to GP, pharmacist, pharmacy technician and nursing cover.
