Match your experience to the task list

Practice pharmacy roles can involve patient consultations, medicines queries, reconciliation work or defined improvement projects. Ask which tasks make up the proposed sessions and how the practice allocates them. The title “clinical pharmacist” tells you little about the patient groups, prescribing or how much independent work is expected.

Show what you have actually done

Describe recent work using examples that contain no patient information: the setting, your responsibility, the systems used and the support available. Separate experience you have undertaken independently from work completed under supervision. Include relevant primary care training and your prescribing status, and be clear about which tasks they cover.

Check the working pattern and supervision

Decide whether you want regular sessions in one team or occasional cover. Ask who provides clinical support and how work is handed over when you are absent. If you are moving from another pharmacy setting, talk openly about induction and what you still need to learn. A brief written for an experienced practice pharmacist may not suit you yet.

Choose remote or on-site practice sessions

For on-site work, agree the surgery or PCN sites, consultation space, travel and induction. For remote sessions, discuss the particular workload, authorised clinical-system access, live support and any attendance requirements. The arrangement should fit the duties and your recent experience.

Describe experience without overstating it

For example: explain that you have supported a defined medicines workflow in a practice, used a named system and discussed queries with an identified supervisor. State whether you have conducted patient consultations or prescribed in that setting. Avoid using “primary care experienced” as the whole description.

Professional requirements for the role

Check GPhC registration in Great Britain or PSNI registration in Northern Ireland. Verify prescribing status when required.

Describe the actual medicines workload, relevant experience and supervision arrangements. Someone with a community pharmacy background or a prescribing qualification may still need support with some general practice work. Check any applicable training and funding requirements separately.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about the work

Can a community pharmacist register for GP practice work?

Yes. Describe transferable experience and any gaps honestly. Whether a role suits you depends on the duties, training, induction and supervision on offer. Community experience helps, but practice work has its own demands.

Must every clinical pharmacist role involve prescribing?

No single requirement covers every enquiry. The practice must specify whether prescribing is part of the assignment and check the necessary professional status, experience and arrangements for those duties.

Does it cost anything to register?

No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
