For GP practices and PCNs

Locum GPs for your practice

Send the sessions you need covered and the work involved. We take enquiries for GP locums working on site, remotely or across an agreed combination of both.

Illustrative GP cover workspace showing a request for two on-site sessions.

The silent animation selects Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon GP sessions, reviews patient appointment duties and practice support, and sends a cover enquiry. The acknowledgement explains that suitable availability, required checks and written terms must be agreed before confirmation.

Describe the gap in your rota

Start with what the absent capacity normally covers: routine appointments, a defined patient group, a duty session or a combination of consultations and administration. Give the dates, hours and any flexibility. A request for “a GP for the day” leaves important questions about workload and support unresolved.

If a session includes home visits, additional sites or responsibilities beyond the appointment list, spell those out. Identify which tasks remain with the practice team.

Choose the working arrangement around the service

Decide which work needs a clinician in the building and which could be undertaken remotely with suitable access and a local follow-up route. For a mixed arrangement, name the on-site days and the actual practice locations. Do not leave this decision until access is being arranged.

Give the locum a route into the team

Name the operational contact who can arrange accounts and induction, and the clinical contact available during sessions. Prepare a short briefing on local referral, communication and handover processes. Agree who picks up unfinished work after the final booked session, including work received later.

Booking

From request to confirmed booking

Post the shift, review applicants and agree terms in writing. Every step is recorded for you and the locum.

Turn a rota gap into a usable brief

For example: two morning sessions at one practice for four weeks, with a defined appointment list, stated administration time and an identified handover contact. If the second session could be remote, explain which work would move and who would arrange any necessary in-person follow-up.

Professional requirements for the role

Check GMC registration, licence to practise and GP Register status, plus applicable national performers-list requirements.

A booking needs more than a registration number. Review recent general practice experience, indemnity, references and the practice’s onboarding requirements. Agree who owns outstanding results, correspondence and follow-up after the session.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about booking cover

Does requesting GP cover confirm a booking?

No. We need to review suitable availability and agree the person, professional checks, duties, dates, pay and terms. Do not amend a patient-facing rota on the assumption that an enquiry has secured cover.

Can a GP locum request be treated as ARRS-funded cover?

Not automatically. Funding is separate from finding a locum and depends on the current scheme and the particular arrangement. Confirm eligibility with the appropriate PCN or commissioner before relying on it.

How much is the booking fee?

£19.99 + VAT per locum for each calendar day worked, including a part-day. Prices exclude VAT. The practice contracts with and pays the locum directly, including agreed expenses, separately from our fee. The same fee applies to GP, pharmacist, pharmacy technician and nursing cover.
