For GP practices and PCNs

On-site locum GPs for your surgery

Arrange a request for GP cover at your practice premises. Include the clinic, location and responsibilities so the assignment can be assessed against suitable experience and availability.

Give each session a clear purpose

Set out the face-to-face appointment list, any telephone work and time for associated administration. If you need a duty GP or home visits, say so. They change the role a great deal, and a locum needs to know before accepting.

Make the site ready for the person

Identify the consulting room, equipment, individual system account and contact who will meet the locum. Plan orientation around the start of patient work. For a branch practice or unfamiliar site, include entry arrangements and how to reach other team members during the session.

Plan continuity across cover dates

For a short absence, decide who receives the final handover. For repeated sessions, explain whether appointments will be arranged to support continuity. Make responsibilities for results, correspondence and outstanding tasks clear, including anything that may arrive after the booking finishes.

If demand changes, discuss additional duties or extended hours with the locum. A confirmed day of cover is not an undefined commitment to every task that appears on the day.

Booking

From request to confirmed booking

Post the shift, review applicants and agree terms in writing. Every step is recorded for you and the locum.

Brief a multi-site booking accurately

If a GP is needed at one branch in the morning and another in the afternoon, list both addresses and the expected travel interval. State whether travel is within paid time and which site owns administrative work from the morning. This avoids a session plan that only works on paper.

Professional requirements for the role

Check GMC registration, licence to practise and GP Register status, plus applicable national performers-list requirements.

A booking needs more than a registration number. Review recent general practice experience, indemnity, references and the practice’s onboarding requirements. Agree who owns outstanding results, correspondence and follow-up after the session.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about booking cover

Can I request a particular GP for repeat cover?

Include the preference, dates and whether continuity is important. The request remains subject to that person’s availability and agreement; it does not guarantee that the same clinician can cover every date.

Who provides the consulting room and system access?

The booking should identify the practice contact responsible for facilities, equipment and authorised access. Confirm readiness before the first session, including the arrangements at every site involved.

How much is the booking fee?

£19.99 + VAT per locum for each calendar day worked, including a part-day. Prices exclude VAT. The practice contracts with and pays the locum directly, including agreed expenses, separately from our fee. The same fee applies to GP, pharmacist, pharmacy technician and nursing cover.
