Choose the clinic mix you can undertake

Practice nursing covers varied work. Describe the skills you use now, clinic by clinic. A proposed session might include long-term condition work, screening or procedural appointments, each with its own requirements. Ask for the actual clinic list and the relevant training or competency evidence the practice expects.

Separate registration from specialist experience

Set out your nursing background, recent general practice work and any prescribing or advanced-practice qualification relevant to the duties. Be clear about skills you use regularly, those needing an update and work you do not undertake. A precise profile makes it easier to discuss a suitable booking and appropriate support.

Decide which working arrangement fits the work

Hands-on procedures need physical attendance; some defined review, communication or follow-up tasks may be considered for remote delivery where the service supports it. Specify whether you want clinics on site, suitable remote work or an agreed mixture.

Ask about appointment lengths, documentation time, supervision and the handover process. Include the hours, pay and cancellation terms when deciding whether a role fits your availability.

Explore sessions in the setting you can support

Compare the duties and support before selecting a working arrangement. For suitable remote work, ask how the practice manages access, live escalation and handover; for on-site clinics, check the room, equipment and appointment plan.

Use a skills-based availability note

For example: identify the clinics you have recently run, the systems used and the days you can offer. State any clinic types you are not currently undertaking. Do not describe yourself as able to cover every appointment on a practice rota unless the actual duties and evidence have been discussed.

Professional requirements for the role

Check current NMC registration and relevant register entries. Nursing registration applies across the UK.

Match the individual to the advertised duties and patient groups. A registered nurse is not automatically an advanced practitioner or a prescriber. Include any required prescribing qualification, recent procedure-specific experience and support arrangements in the brief.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about the work

Are these advanced nurse practitioner roles?

This page is for practice nursing enquiries. If a request requires advanced practice or prescribing, those responsibilities and qualifications must be specified and assessed separately. General nursing registration does not cover either of these.

Can I register while returning to general practice nursing?

Explain your background, time away and any support or updates you need. The role must fit your current competence and the practice’s arrangements; registration with FindALocum does not replace a return-to-practice or competency requirement.

Does it cost anything to register?

No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
