For GP practices and PCNs

Locum pharmacy technicians for your practice

Request technician support for defined medicines workflows in your GP practice or PCN. Describe the work, required experience and the pharmacist or prescriber support available.

Separate technician work from prescribing decisions

Describe the specific workflow you want covered: medicines-related correspondence, support with reconciliation, repeat-prescription processes or communication with other pharmacy teams. Explain which actions the technician can complete under your procedures and which questions must go to another professional.

Avoid an open-ended request to manage all medicines work. A useful brief identifies the person who owns decisions beyond the technician’s agreed role.

Match experience to the practice workflow

State the clinical system, the sources of incoming work and the volume or session structure you expect. Ask for relevant examples of technician experience. If the role needs a particular skill or training record, name it and say what it is for. Technician qualifications cover different things.

Arrange the team support around the booking

Name a supervisor or responsible contact, plan induction and agree how completed and outstanding work will be recorded. For a PCN assignment, clarify which practice sets priorities. Check training and funding conditions separately from the recruitment request; neither the title nor the working arrangement decides reimbursement eligibility.

Booking

From request to confirmed booking

Post the shift, review applicants and agree terms in writing. Every step is recorded for you and the locum.

Register your practice

A clearer request than “pharmacy support”

For example: request support for a stated medicines correspondence workflow on two mornings each week. Identify the system, applicable procedures and pharmacist receiving queries. Explain the work the practice expects completed during those sessions and who retains unresolved items.

Professional requirements for the role

Great Britain requires GPhC technician registration. PSNI does not currently register technicians in Northern Ireland; check relevant qualifications and experience.

Specify the technician duties, local procedures and supervision. Dispensing, accuracy-checking and system qualifications each cover only part of the work in a GP practice. Identify who reviews decisions outside the agreed technician role.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about booking cover

Can a technician replace pharmacist or prescribing cover?

Define the professional role needed for each duty. A technician booking must not rely on the person undertaking pharmacist or prescribing responsibilities that fall outside their role. Request the appropriate professional separately when needed.

Can a technician support several surgeries?

Include the practices, systems and task allocation in your request. Access, priorities, supervision and handover need to work across the whole booking. Practices in the same PCN often work in different ways.

How much is the booking fee?

£19.99 + VAT per locum for each calendar day worked, including a part-day. Prices exclude VAT. The practice contracts with and pays the locum directly, including agreed expenses, separately from our fee. The same fee applies to GP, pharmacist, pharmacy technician and nursing cover.
