Get shift alertsChoose sessions by the whole workload
A session description should explain more than its start and finish time. Ask about appointment mix, consultation length, administrative work, home visits if relevant and how the practice handles work that arrives towards the end of a session. A familiar clinical system does not tell you how a particular surgery organises its day.
For a recurring booking, ask whether you will see the same patient groups and how continuity is managed between your sessions. For occasional cover, identify the person receiving your handover.
Make your availability useful to a practice
Give actual dates or a repeatable weekly pattern, your travel area and any limits on location or hours. Describe recent practice settings and systems you have used, along with any induction you would need. If you are open to remote work, say whether that includes occasional attendance at the practice.
Agree the booking before reserving the time
Compare the proposed rate with the paid hours and duties, including administration, travel or visits where applicable. Ask who approves your timesheet or invoice and how cancellations are handled. Registering sends us an enquiry. Sessions are only booked once the details are agreed and confirmed.
Shift alerts
Hear about new shifts first
When a practice posts GP work that fits your days and travel distance, we email you a link to it.
Get shift alertsA useful availability note
For example: available on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next six weeks; able to travel within an agreed area; recent experience with the practice’s system; interested in routine sessions with administration time specified. Write about your own experience and limits, and leave out anything that does not apply to you.
Professional requirements for the role
Check GMC registration, licence to practise and GP Register status, plus applicable national performers-list requirements.
A booking needs more than a registration number. Review recent general practice experience, indemnity, references and the practice’s onboarding requirements. Agree who owns outstanding results, correspondence and follow-up after the session.
State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Does a published GP vacancy confirm a booking?
The vacancy section lists genuine published opportunities when available. Viewing a vacancy, enquiring or registering does not reserve sessions or confirm a booking. Availability, the practice, dates, duties, pay and terms still need to be checked and agreed. You can register your availability even when no matching vacancies are published.
Can I register for both remote and on-site GP work?
Yes. Explain which days or circumstances suit each arrangement. If a role mixes the two, confirm the attendance pattern and travel expectations before agreeing to it.
Does it cost anything to register?
No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
