Start with the role and country of work
Ask for a written description of the setting, duties, systems and support. Dispensing, final accuracy checking and a practice medicines workflow need different evidence. A job title leaves too many questions open.
Pharmacy technicians must be registered with the GPhC to practise in England, Scotland and Wales. PSNI currently does not register or regulate pharmacy technicians in Northern Ireland. Check its latest position and the employer’s qualification requirements before assuming the same registration process applies everywhere.
Organise registration and qualification evidence
For Great Britain, have your GPhC number and the name under which you are registered ready. Tell the checking contact about relevant conditions or restrictions. A number supplied on an enquiry still needs checking against the current register.
Keep qualification certificates and a short record of recent relevant learning. Explain a name difference between a certificate and your current details through the agreed private checking process. Ask which documents need checking, and send only those.
- Registration details where applicable.
- Qualification name, awarding body and date.
- Relevant training, assessment and review dates.
- Any limits on the work you can accept.
Evidence accuracy checking and specialist duties separately
If final accuracy checking is requested, discuss the relevant training, assessment, recent checking experience and local authorisation. CPPE’s ACPT programme is one example of a dedicated accuracy-checking training route; it is not a universal requirement for every technician post.
Keep evidence specific to the proposed duties. Describe the setting in which you used the skill, the work you checked and any limits. Ask what local induction or assessment is needed. Registration and qualifications do not automatically authorise you for every task at a new workplace.
Prepare a CV and references that explain your experience
A concise CV should show recent settings, responsibilities and systems. Explain any gap or change of setting plainly. For practice work, describe the information-handling and medicines workflows you know. A dispensary job title will not show this.
Ask referees before sharing their contact details. Agree who will request references and whether the hirer needs a particular format. Keep a note of which evidence has been requested, who owns the next step and what remains outstanding.
Use a private checking process for sensitive evidence
The hirer may require identity, right-to-work, occupational health or criminal-record checks appropriate to the role. Ask the designated contact what is required, how it will be reviewed and where to send it securely. NHS organisations follow employment check standards, and the registration standard is clear that being registered is only part of being suitable.
FindALocum’s public registration form is an initial enquiry. Do not attach or paste identity documents, bank details, health information or patient records into general messages. Keeping a document index is useful; copying sensitive evidence into every cover discussion is not.
- Record the checking contact and agreed secure route.
- Record each requested item and its status.
- Use expiry dates only where the document actually has one.
- Resolve outstanding requirements before treating a booking as confirmed.
Keep preparation separate from booking confirmation
An organised pack helps a hirer review a role. It does not confirm the dates, pay, access or suitability. Agree those details in writing, including induction, support, expenses and the process for approving hours.
You contract with and are paid by the hiring organisation directly. FindALocum registration is free for technicians. We are building our network; submitting availability does not guarantee work.
Download an editable checklist
Save a plain-text copy and edit it with your team. Use it alongside this guide and the workplace’s current procedures. Keep patient details, credentials and sensitive documents out of planning notes.
- Pharmacy technician document index (TXT)
Track requested evidence, checking contacts and outstanding actions without copying sensitive documents.
Common questions
Do I need a PSNI technician registration number?
PSNI currently does not register or regulate pharmacy technicians in Northern Ireland. Check its latest information and the qualifications and experience required by the hirer. GPhC registration applies to pharmacy technician practice in Great Britain.
Does technician registration prove accuracy-checking competence?
It does not settle the requirements of a particular checking assignment. Discuss relevant training, assessment, recent practice and local checking authorisation separately.
Should I send all my documents when I register?
No. Use the initial form for contact details, experience and availability. Ask for the agreed private checking process before sharing sensitive documents.
