Understand the practice environment

Ask where you will work, who is in the medicines team and how requests reach that team. A surgery can have different routines from a dispensary even when some terminology is familiar. Clarify whether the post includes patient contact, liaison with pharmacies or work across several practice task lists.

Arrange a proper introduction to local processes

Identify the colleague who will explain procedures and support your first sessions. Check individual system access, relevant templates and how the practice records completion or escalation. Ask where questions go when the usual contact is absent. A written workflow is more useful than an assumption that you can copy whatever happened on the previous day.

Compare the whole booking

Include travel between sites, induction, paid hours and the expected workload when considering an assignment. If a PCN wants sessions at several practices, obtain the actual addresses and timetable. Make any limits on travel or working hours clear before agreeing.

Check how the practice wants work handed over at the end of the day and at the end of the placement. Be precise about what is complete and what still needs another person’s decision.

Explain your relevant on-site experience

For example: describe working within a medicines team, using a defined procedure and communicating with colleagues when information was incomplete. If that experience came from a hospital or community setting, say so and identify the practice-specific induction you would need.

Professional requirements for the role

Great Britain requires GPhC technician registration. PSNI does not currently register technicians in Northern Ireland; check relevant qualifications and experience.

Specify the technician duties, local procedures and supervision. Dispensing, accuracy-checking and system qualifications each cover only part of the work in a GP practice. Identify who reviews decisions outside the agreed technician role.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about the work

Will I be working in a dispensary?

Not necessarily. This page covers technician work in general practice, which may be based in an office or medicines team. A dispensing practice should specify any dispensary duties and the relevant requirements separately.

Can I register for one local practice rather than a wider area?

Yes. State your preferred area and whether you want a single-site or recurring arrangement. The available work depends on practice requests and agreement of the assignment.

Does it cost anything to register?

No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
