Match the dispenser to the dispensary

A busy high-street pharmacy, a dispensing GP practice and a hospital dispensary each run differently. Describe the tasks and systems so the right person is matched to the shift.

Community pharmacy

Labelling and assembling prescriptions, stock and ordering, prescription queries and handing out checked medicines. Include the PMR system, the typical number of items a day and any services the dispenser would support.

Dispensing GP practices

Dispensing for the practice’s dispensing patients under its own procedures. Describe the clinical system, the repeat prescription process and who completes the final accuracy check.

Hospital pharmacy

Dispensary and outpatient prescriptions, ward stock top-ups and discharge medicines. State any local training the role needs and the systems used.

What to include in a dispenser cover request

Country and workplace
The country of work, the setting and the full address of the pharmacy, practice or hospital.
Dates and workload
The hours, breaks, typical daily item numbers and the tasks to cover, for example dispensing, stock or deliveries.
Qualification and support
The qualification you need, for example a level 2 dispensing qualification, the recent experience you want, and who supervises the dispensary on the day.
Systems and induction
The PMR or clinical system, any dispensing robot, your local procedures and the person giving the induction.
Pay and confirmation
The proposed rate, how payment works, any expenses and cancellation terms, with a named person who can confirm the booking.

We are building our network across these roles. An enquiry lets us review the requirement and suitable availability; cover is confirmed only after the person, required checks, pay and terms are agreed.

Training rules for dispensers

Pharmacy dispensers are not on a professional register. In England, Scotland and Wales, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) requires staff who dispense or supply medicines from a registered pharmacy to complete an approved course at RQF level 2 or SCQF level 5. A new starter must enrol within three months of starting the role and normally finishes within three years.

Staff who met earlier versions of these rules keep their status and do not need to retrain. Ask for the certificate, or the enrolment letter for someone still training, and check it covers the duties you need.

Dispensing GP practices and hospitals set their own training requirements, often through a dispensing quality scheme or local policy. Arrangements in Northern Ireland differ, so agree the training needed with the employer there. Put the qualification you need in your request.

Checks before a dispenser is booked

Before anyone can be booked, FindALocum checks their identity and right to work, their DBS certificate, their dispensing qualification or course enrolment, and their references.

Agree on the day who completes the clinical check and the final accuracy check, and which questions the dispenser passes to the pharmacist or GP.

Free to register, with no work-finding fees.

Register for pharmacy dispenser work

Tell us your dispensing qualification or the course you are on, the settings and systems you know, and when you can work. Registration is free, with no work-finding fees.

Upload your certificate or enrolment letter with your other documents. Once we have checked your identity, right to work, DBS and references, you can apply for dispenser shifts near you and agree your pay directly with the pharmacy or practice.

Only genuine authorised opportunities are published. View published dispenser vacancies or register your availability if no suitable role is listed.

Booking questions

Do pharmacy dispensers need professional registration?

Dispensers are not on a professional register. In England, Scotland and Wales, the GPhC requires anyone dispensing in a registered pharmacy to complete an approved course at RQF level 2 or SCQF level 5, enrolling within three months of starting the role.

Can a trainee dispenser register?

Yes, if you are enrolled on an approved dispensing course. Upload your enrolment letter and tell us the duties you have trained for so far. Each pharmacy or practice decides which duties suit a trainee.

Do you cover dispensing GP practices?

Yes. Dispensing practices post dispenser shifts in the same way as pharmacies. Describe the clinical system, the repeat prescription process and who checks the dispensing.

Can dispensers work remotely?

Dispensing is hands-on work in the pharmacy or practice, so dispenser shifts are on site.

What does dispenser cover cost?

FindALocum’s booking fee is £19.99 + VAT per dispenser, per day worked. The pharmacy or practice pays the dispenser directly, including any agreed expenses. Registration is free for dispensers.
