Confirm the actual site for every session, arrival arrangements and whether work includes travel between branches or home visits. A PCN booking can involve several premises with different systems and teams. Account for that travel when considering consecutive sessions or another commitment later in the day.
Understand the consultation and duty mix
Ask whether the booking is for a routine appointment list, a duty role or a mixture of work. Clarify administrative time, who allocates extra requests and how the practice handles workload near the end of a session. Include any relevant limits or support needs in your response to the brief.
Prepare for a new building and a new workflow
Obtain a named arrival contact and time for orientation. Check the room, system access, communication methods and local support arrangements before the first appointment. Ask how the team wants handover recorded, as it may differ from your last surgery.
For repeated bookings, keep a note of agreed changes to the session. If an extra site or a new duty is added, discuss it as a change to the work.
Shift alerts
Hear about new shifts first
When a practice posts GP work that fits your days and travel distance, we email you a link to it.
Get shift alertsMake travel limits clear
For example: available for morning sessions within your stated travel area, with afternoon work possible only at the same site. If you can undertake visits, describe the arrangements you can accept. Clear limits help avoid a booking that depends on an unrealistic journey between practices.
Professional requirements for the role
Check GMC registration, licence to practise and GP Register status, plus applicable national performers-list requirements.
A booking needs more than a registration number. Review recent general practice experience, indemnity, references and the practice’s onboarding requirements. Agree who owns outstanding results, correspondence and follow-up after the session.
State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Register for freeQuestions about the work
Will every on-site GP booking include home visits?
No. Visits must be specified and agreed for the particular assignment. Ask about travel, timing, support and whether visits fall inside the paid session.
Can I take regular sessions at one surgery?
You can register that preference and give a repeatable availability pattern. A recurring placement depends on a suitable practice request and agreed terms; registration does not reserve a regular rota.
Does it cost anything to register?
No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
