Ask which medicines-related tasks you will receive, how they are allocated and what you are expected to record. Clarify what happens to incomplete information, a query outside your role or work arriving at the end of a session. Remote access does not remove the need for a named pharmacist or prescriber contact.
Test the tools you will actually use
Find out which clinical system, messaging channels and approved remote access methods the practice uses. You may need to communicate with practice colleagues, community pharmacies or patients as part of the agreed workflow; each route should be clear. Arrange individual accounts and a test before the first working session.
Agree how availability is measured
Check whether the booking is for fixed hours, a particular session or a defined task within agreed time. Ask when colleagues will be available to answer questions and how technical downtime is handled. Avoid assuming that remote work means you can complete tasks at any hour.
If on-site induction is required, include it in your availability. State the location you will work from and confirm the practice’s equipment and privacy requirements.

For example: describe handling a defined practice task list through approved access, documenting progress and referring exceptions to a named colleague. Explain how you worked within the procedure. Avoid describing administrative access as authority to make clinical or prescribing decisions.
Professional requirements for the role
Great Britain requires GPhC technician registration. PSNI does not currently register technicians in Northern Ireland; check relevant qualifications and experience.
Specify the technician duties, local procedures and supervision. Dispensing, accuracy-checking and system qualifications each cover only part of the work in a GP practice. Identify who reviews decisions outside the agreed technician role.
State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Is remote technician work general data entry?
A practice technician role needs a defined professional scope and appropriate experience. Some tasks are administrative. Even so, the request should explain the medicines workflow, who is responsible and who supervises.
Can I choose my own working hours?
State your preferred hours, but the booking may require fixed availability when the practice team is working. Agree the timetable, response expectations and handover before accepting.
Does it cost anything to register?
No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
