Ask for the types of clinics, patient groups and procedures the practice needs covered. Explain which duties you undertake regularly and where you would need an update or support. A nurse rota can contain several distinct skill requirements, so do not judge a booking only by the session length.
Check that the clinic can run as planned
Confirm the room, required equipment, supplies, local procedures and appropriate support for the agreed work. Ask who handles a missing resource or a change to the list. Your arrival should allow time to understand the practice’s arrangements before the first appointment.
Make travel and documentation time visible
Get the exact surgery address and any other sites in the booking. Include travel between clinics, induction and documentation when discussing paid hours. Ask how to reach a clinical colleague during the session and who accepts handover.
For recurring cover, clarify whether the same clinic pattern will continue each week. If the procedures or patient groups change, check them against your skills before you agree to the new work.

Match the individual to the advertised duties and patient groups. A registered nurse is not automatically an advanced practitioner or a prescriber. Include any required prescribing qualification, recent procedure-specific experience and support arrangements in the brief.
State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Can I accept only the clinic types I am competent to run?
State your skills and limits clearly. The proposed booking should be assessed and agreed against those duties. Being booked on site does not mean you have to take on tasks outside your skills.
Will the practice provide equipment and supplies?
The booking should say who provides everything needed for the agreed clinic. Check readiness and the contact for missing resources before the session; do not rely on assumptions from a previous practice.
Does it cost anything to register?
No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
