Find out how you will work with the practice

Ask whether sessions focus on patient appointments, a medicines work queue or a combination. Understand how the pharmacist fits into the team: where questions come from, who can offer clinical input and how the practice allocates additional work.

Confirm the consultation space and tools

Check that the role has an appropriate room or workspace, individual access to the clinical system and the equipment needed for the agreed duties. If patient appointments are included, find out how they are booked and how much time is allocated for documentation and follow-up.

Plan a manageable pattern across surgeries

For a PCN assignment, obtain the location and hours for each practice. Ask whether you will use one system configuration or several and when orientation will take place. Include travel between sites and repeated inductions when considering a booking.

Before the first session, agree where to record unfinished work and who will own it after your final day. A short locum placement still needs a clear handover.

Describe the booking you can accept

For example: two fixed days in one surgery, with experience relevant to the stated medicines workload and time for the practice’s induction. If you can also cover another site, say how far you can travel. PCN practices can be some distance apart.

Professional requirements for the role

Check GPhC registration in Great Britain or PSNI registration in Northern Ireland. Verify prescribing status when required.

Describe the actual medicines workload, relevant experience and supervision arrangements. Someone with a community pharmacy background or a prescribing qualification may still need support with some general practice work. Check any applicable training and funding requirements separately.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about the work

Are these community pharmacy shifts?

These pages concern clinical pharmacist work within general practices and PCNs. Community pharmacy cover has different premises, workflows and service requirements; specify your preferred setting when registering.

Can on-site sessions include remote follow-up work?

They can if this is agreed as part of the role. Confirm where each task is carried out, access arrangements, paid time and responsibility for work outside the on-site session.

Does it cost anything to register?

No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
