Ask whether the sessions involve planned follow-up, a specified review workflow, patient communication or another defined task. Find out how patients are selected and what information is available. A remote nurse title should not conceal an expectation to undertake any request that arrives by telephone.
Keep the boundary with hands-on care clear
Vaccinations, sample collection and wound care cannot be delivered through a telephone or video call. If a patient needs attendance, the practice needs a clear route to arrange it. Understand the responsibility you hold for the remote task and the point at which work transfers to the on-site team.
Confirm support and access before your first session
Agree authorised records access, communication tools, privacy and the location you will work from. Identify the clinician available for questions and the contact for technical problems. Clarify how work is documented and handed over when you finish.
State any need for on-site induction and confirm whether the post includes occasional attendance. Check the fixed hours and patient contact expected. Many remote roles run to a set timetable.

Professional requirements for the role
Check current NMC registration and relevant register entries. Nursing registration applies across the UK.
Match the individual to the advertised duties and patient groups. A registered nurse is not automatically an advanced practitioner or a prescriber. Include any required prescribing qualification, recent procedure-specific experience and support arrangements in the brief.
State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Can a fully remote nurse cover procedural clinics?
A remote booking cannot provide physical procedures in the surgery. The practice must arrange appropriately skilled on-site cover for those duties and define any separate remote work.
Does a remote nursing role include prescribing?
Only if the assignment asks for it and the qualification, registration, competence and service arrangements have been checked. A role title does not tell you whether prescribing is included.
Does it cost anything to register?
No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
