Ask what happens beyond the remote appointment

Understand how patients reach your list, what information you can access and how the practice arranges a face-to-face appointment when one is needed. Find out who is available locally during your session and how you can contact them. Remote working depends on those connections as much as the consultation software.

Clarify the work expected between and after appointments. A session may include correspondence, results or other tasks; those responsibilities and the handover point should be explicit.

Check your setup before accepting the start date

Confirm approved equipment, secure access, consultation tools and a private workspace. Ask whether a system test and induction can happen before the first patient session. Agree what happens if your connection fails, including how the practice will know you are unavailable and who will handle the affected appointments.

State where you will actually be working

A remote post does not automatically mean permission to work from any country. Tell the practice your intended working location and confirm that its access, insurance and governance arrangements permit it. If the role includes attendance for induction or occasional clinics, include those commitments when comparing the booking.

Remote sessions

Ready before the session starts

Secure access, two-step sign-in and a named contact for escalation are agreed before any remote work begins.

Describe remote experience precisely

For example: name the clinical and consultation systems you have used, when you last used them and the type of sessions you undertook. Explain what support and access those roles provided. Avoid a broad “fully remote-ready” claim that leaves a new practice guessing about your setup.

Professional requirements for the role

Check GMC registration, licence to practise and GP Register status, plus applicable national performers-list requirements.

A booking needs more than a registration number. Review recent general practice experience, indemnity, references and the practice’s onboarding requirements. Agree who owns outstanding results, correspondence and follow-up after the session.

State the country where the service is delivered. Onboarding, local service requirements and any funding conditions need checking for that assignment.

Questions about the work

Are remote GP jobs the same as online-only private consultations?

This page concerns locum work for general practices and PCNs. Each enquiry needs its own service description, patient pathway and responsibilities. Terms from other online consultation services do not carry over.

Can a remote role still require attendance?

Yes, a practice may require an on-site induction or offer a role with some face-to-face sessions. State your availability for attendance and obtain the agreed arrangement before treating a post as fully remote.

Does it cost anything to register?

No. Registration and work-finding are free for locums. You choose which assignments to accept and agree your rate, expenses and terms directly with the practice, which pays you directly.
